Building for the Future
Capital Campaigns That Create Lasting Change
Imagine Your Church as a Beacon in the Community
Imagine a church, your church, thriving and radiating hope and love not just to its members but to the community around it. A church where dreams take off and every corner buzzes with the vibrant energy of mission and ministry. Weekly, it fulfills people’s needs for connection, caring, and belonging. It feeds hungry souls and hungry bellies, fosters friendships, provides recovery from the hard knocks of life, and welcomes those seeking God’s presence. This is a glimpse of the divine Kingdom of God manifested on Earth in the spirit of Jesus Christ, all because of your congregation’s dedication and hard work.
Caring for Your Building: A Commitment to Your Community
At the heart of this work lies the building – a powerful catalyst and hub for the impactful ministry opportunities that your church is involved in or envisions for its future. It’s not just a structure but a symbol of your commitment to the community. A facility that supports the mission that God has set before you. But also a building that occasionally needs some tender, loving care. Some repairs are required. Some upgrades will better facilitate the ministries of today. There are new programs that require new and different spaces.
When Your Building Needs Extra Care: Time for a Capital Campaign
Caring for your building shows your commitment to the congregation and the surrounding community as a place to worship, belong, and serve. When your building needs extra care, it’s time for a capital campaign. By harnessing the collective strength of your congregation, a capital campaign can unlock your church’s potential, enabling it to reach new heights in service and spirituality.
Assessing the Need for a Capital Campaign
Before starting a capital campaign, an evaluation of your church’s current facilities, programs, and financial health is crucial. A comprehensive assessment will help you identify specific needs that a capital campaign could address, ensuring your efforts are targeted and effective.
Start by taking a 30,000-foot view of your church’s infrastructure. Consider how well your current facilities support your ministry and mission. Ask yourself these questions: Do outdated facilities limit your community outreach programs? Are critical repairs and maintenance draining your budget? Questions like these will help you pinpoint immediate needs and potential areas for growth.
Key Areas to Evaluate in Your Church’s Facilities
Here are some of the primary issues that we see churches addressing.
Systems and Equipment: Document the age and expected life cycle of major systems like HVAC, roofing, plumbing, and electrical. Determine any urgent repair or replacement needs. Understanding the condition and lifespan of your infrastructure can shed light on areas where investment is necessary to avoid future disruptions and costly emergencies.
Efficiency and Use: Are there areas of the church that are underutilized or could be repurposed for more effective ministry? Assess if your building is meeting the needs of your members and community as a whole. Is your space accessible to everyone? Are there obstacles that diminish the full participation of all members? Addressing these issues can significantly enhance the inclusivity and functionality of your church.
Safety and Compliance: Ensure your facilities meet building codes and regulations. Address any safety risks or concerns, such as fire safety, security measures, and emergency preparedness. Investing in these areas protects your congregation and demonstrates your commitment to their well-being.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability: Assess your facilities’ energy efficiency and explore opportunities to reduce energy consumption and costs through upgrades or renovations. Consider investing in renewable energy sources and adopting sustainable building practices.
Historic and Aesthetic Value: Are there historical elements that need preservation? How does the overall appearance of your church impact its appeal and functionality? Sometimes, cosmetic upgrades can significantly enhance the environment, making worship and community activities more inviting and inspiring.
Technological Infrastructure: Evaluate whether your church has adequate technological support for modern ministry needs, such as updated audio-visual equipment, internet connectivity, and digital communication tools. This is especially important for supporting virtual or hybrid worship services, which have recently become the norm in many churches.
Financial and Operational Impact: Managing and running existing facilities costs money. Assess the current and projected financial impact of these activities. Are there opportunities to save money through smart upgrades? Consider how capital improvements could enhance your church’s long-term economic health and operational efficiency.
Having a clear understanding and vision for addressing your church’s facility needs is crucial. To see how a capital campaign can transform a church and its community, let’s explore the inspiring story of Community UCC.
Community UCC’s Transformative Journey: A Success Story
Located on the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign campus, Community United Church of Christ fosters spiritual well-being, promotes community engagement, and champions social justice. Known for its inclusive environment, the church aims to provide support and care within its community and beyond.
By 2018, however, the condition of its facilities was beginning to hinder its mission. With aging infrastructure and the need for significant upgrades, Community UCC embarked on a transformative journey through a comprehensive capital campaign.
Recognizing the Need: Community UCC’s Initial Challenges
The leaders of Community UCC knew that to continue their impactful work, they needed to address several critical issues with their building. The church’s sanctuary, while beautiful, required new plaster and paint. Flat tile and asphalt roofs had outlasted their useful life and required replacement. The 35-year-old elevator’s hydraulic system, controller, and doors needed a complete overhaul. On a positive note, the plans included a new wireless projector in the sanctuary and a monitor for the choir. Furthermore, accessibility issues prevented some members from fully participating in church activities.
Understanding these challenges, the church leadership took a bold step. After completing a Capital Needs Assessment, they realized a capital campaign was more than fixing a building. It could revitalize their ministry and enhance their ability to serve the community. With this goal in mind, they launched the “Deeply Rooted” campaign.
Launching the Campaign: The “Deeply Rooted” Vision
The leaders of Community UCC set an ambitious goal of raising $500,000 for the “Deeply Rooted” campaign. This amount would cover essential repairs and upgrades, ensuring the church could continue to be a vibrant worship and community service hub. The campaign was framed around viewing the church building as a critical tool for ministry and seeing repairs as an investment in the church’s future mission and impact.
Campaign Team Leader Jen Robbennolt had this to say:
“We are a campus church, repeatedly affirming our collective desire to be a beacon of hope in this place. We are a “doing” church with branches that reach beyond our walls. We are an open and affirming church, celebrating our 25th anniversary of having formally made that covenant.
“We are deeply rooted in community—in this community — and collectively look toward a future with hope. To do all of this effectively, we need to update and prepare our building—our 100-year-old building!—to fully support the missions that we have set for ourselves.
“We need to be good stewards of our space—to repair and prevent further damage. We need to make the building as welcoming as we are as a community—to make it accessible and approachable to all.
“To this end, we are embarking on a major capital building campaign: the “Deeply Rooted” campaign.”
The response to the campaign was remarkable. Community UCC met and exceeded its $500,000 goal. With the funding secured, the church undertook the renovations it set out to accomplish. The impact of the “Deeply Rooted” campaign was both immediate and profound. The enhanced facilities reinvigorated the congregation. Moreover, the campaign fostered a more profound sense of community and ownership among congregation members. Working together towards a common goal strengthened relationships and reaffirmed their collective commitment to the church’s mission.
A New Chapter of Ministry: Immediate and Lasting Impact
Community UCC’s successful capital campaign is an inspiring example for other churches facing similar challenges. It demonstrates the power of vision, community engagement, and strategic planning. By addressing the building’s physical needs, they were able to unlock new possibilities for ministry, ensuring that it remains a beacon of hope and service for generations to come.
